Duration: Kochi
Kochi has been a gateway of maritime trade for over five centuries. Arab merchants, Chinese traders, Portuguese explorers and Dutch administrators shaped this coastal settlement into one of India’s most important spice ports. The result is a layered city where European churches, Jewish heritage, Kerala palaces and coastal fishing traditions coexist within a compact historic district.
This short cultural journey focuses on Fort Kochi’s colonial heritage and concludes with a traditional Kathakali performance — Kerala’s 17th-century classical dance drama known for elaborate costumes, expressive storytelling and ritualistic makeup preparation.
Upon arrival in Kochi, meet your private guide and begin your walking exploration of Fort Kochi, the city’s most historic neighborhood.
Start along the waterfront promenade where the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets stand against the Arabian Sea. These massive cantilevered nets were introduced by Chinese traders during the era of Kublai Khan and remain one of Kochi’s most distinctive maritime symbols.
Continue to St. Francis Church, built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars. It is one of the oldest European churches in India and reflects early colonial architecture. From here proceed to the impressive Santa Cruz Basilica, known for its white Gothic exterior and richly painted interiors.
Later visit Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace), originally constructed by the Portuguese and renovated by the Dutch. Inside, admire traditional Kerala murals illustrating scenes from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics. The surrounding Jew Town area reflects Kochi’s historic spice trade legacy, with antique shops and old warehouses lining the streets.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning at leisure or optional local exploration.
In the evening, transfer to a traditional theatre to witness a live Kathakali performance, Kerala’s classical dance drama that originated in the 17th century.
Before the performance begins, you will have backstage access to observe artists applying intricate facial makeup and wearing elaborate headgear and layered costumes. The preparation process is a ritualistic transformation where performers gradually embody mythological characters.
The performance itself is a powerful visual spectacle, combining dramatic facial expressions, precise hand gestures (mudras), rhythmic footwork and traditional percussion instruments. Stories are drawn from Indian epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana.
After the show, transfer back to your hotel or onward departure point.
